Prestige models have always been a target of criminals either selling the vehicle on, stripping them down for parts or importing them.
According to recent reports, the theft of cars in the UK, including luxury SUVs, has increased by 4.9% in 2023 compared to 2022. Land Rovers Range Rover Sport and Evoque found themselves at 5th and 6th on the list respectively. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class saw the biggest annual jump in thefts, up 29.6% higher than 2023.
Prestige SUVs from manufacturers such as Land Rover, BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz topped the list of the most vehicles reported stolen to tracking firms.
Keyless entry systems have been blamed for many of the thefts. Your fob itself permanently transmits a signal to your car, using a relay device criminals can hack this signal, open the vehicle and drive away, even when the key is inside your house.
Whilst a lot of these luxury vehicles have a tracker this is of no use if your vehicle has been stripped down for parts.
